国際／全日本空道連盟理事長、大道塾代表師範である東孝塾長が創設した徒手による打撃系総合武道「空道（くうどう）」とは、現実の闘争を想定し、顔面を含めた突き蹴りによる加撃さらには、投げ・絞め・関節技による攻撃を認めながらただ己の強さだけを追求するのではなく武道としての「社会性」、指定防具やルール整備による競技としての「安全性」を兼ね備え、又観る側のわかりやすさをも追求した「武道スポーツ」として2001年、2005年の世界大会を経て世界各地にブームを巻き起こした21世紀生まれの“新しい武道”です。
One of the purposes of martial arts, especially Budo (Judo, Karate-do, Kendo, Aikido, "Kudo" and so on) is to train the mind and body to become strong and utilize that strength for the improvement of our community.
格闘技、特に武道（柔道、空手道、合気道、空道など）を習う大きな目的の一つは心身を鍛練し、社会の進歩に役立てるためである。
Also it is a useful method of cultivating the youth who will contribute to the society through the tough times and events in their life.
また、厳しい人生の時や出来事の中にあっても、社会に貢献しようとする青少年を育てるのに役立つ。
Nowadays, education for the youth in the world is on the verge of decay. Budo is, we can dare to say, a vital “tool” to discipline them and a guide even in ourselves.
今日青少年教育は崩壊の危機に瀕している。敢えて言えば、武道は彼らを鍛練し、彼等自身の指針となる強力な“手段、道具”である。
So we have to evade being misunderstood about the value of “Budo” due to bad impression that mere martial arts apt to give people as “violence without philosophy”.
だから、武道が「哲学、思想を持たない単なる暴力」というな悪い印象を持たれることを避けなければならない。
“

）” means three important philosophical concepts.
空道の“空”には3つの重要な哲学的意味がある。
Mujou kan (無常観)
A view of life as something transient and empty" In other words, anything that has a shape be crushed or changed in its form someday .(Therefore it is no good for us to attached or obsessed by things)
無常観：人生は移ろい実態がないものである。換言すれば、どんな物でもいつかは変化し崩壊する。（だから事物に拘り、執着することは無駄である）
Sougo izon(相互依存)
Interdependancy"All things exist only because they depend on each other ( Therefore one should not be Self-righteousness, or self-conceited)
相互依存：全ての事物は互いに依存（関連、影響）しあって存在する。（だから、独善的、独り善がり、自惚れ、唯我独尊、自己過信をしてはいけない。）
Huhen Huto(不偏不党)
open mind, impartiality, liberalism” We can gain all things if we try to do so earnestly, but in order to be free, we should never persist with them, even day by day affaires, separating ourselves from prejudice, bias and so on.
不偏不党：開かれた心、偏らないこと、自由主義。我々は熱心に取り組めばなんでも達成、到達できる。しかし自由であるためには、それらに執着してはならない（拘りを捨てなければならない）日々の出来事、偏見や、先入観と言ったものから離れることだ。
This perspective may be expressed “Open-Mindism (Grand master Azuma’s Original term) ”.
この大局観、先見性は“開かれた心主義”(東塾長の造語）と表現しても良いかも知れない。
But It never means the way of “Self-centred”, “egoistical” but “Open mind with generous”, “humble heart in robust belief”.
しかし、このことは“自己中”や“利己主義”ではなく、寛容な開かれた心、堅固な信念からの謙虚さ、を意味するものである。
The word “do” in Kudo means “a way of life”.
空道の中の“道” は“生き方”、人生の方向を意味する。
So for those who think the word “Kudo” as a motto of our life, all these three concepts have a heavy, a deep meaning with us.
だから、「空道」と言う言葉を人生の“座右の銘―目標、動機”と考える人間は、これらの3つの観念、概念を（人生の方向と捉え）重く、深く受け止めなければならない。
That is to say, if we meet the any kind of difficulties we must face them positively and never evade without challenge against them in order to gain the ultimate, highest truth.
すなわち、我々はどんなに困難なことに出会っても、人生の至高に到達するためには、全てを前向きに捉え、決して挑戦を避けてはならないのだ。
